The ESU Essay Competition

The Ask-Think-Write Cup is a national essay competition in English for high school students in Romania, organised with our partners from EdVenture. Students look at a real problem in their own community and write an essay proposing well-argued solutions.

Good speaking starts with clear thinking, and writing is where that thinking takes shape. The best essayists then step onto the stage at a live final, to present their ideas and defend them in front of judges and an audience.

This year’s theme – coming soon

How it works

  1. Write your essay – an original essay in English of 500–700 words on this year’s theme.
  2. Submit online – send your essay through the online form during the submission window.
  3. Judging – our judges read every entry and select up to 20 finalists.
  4. Live final – on 15 May 2027, finalists present their essay to the judges and audience and answer questions about their ideas.
  5. Winners announced – at the end of the final

  • At the final: how clearly and confidently you present your essay and respond to questions
